SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is a protocol that enables a web browser and a web server to communicate securely. Security is provided by:
- Authenticating the web server to the client using a digital certificate
- Encrypting all information sent

The SSL protocol requires that the web server should have a digital certificate installed in order to make an SSL connection. All hosting accounts include a free shared SSL certificate. If you would prefer to have your own SSL certificate, we can help you purchase and install a Thawte certificate automatically.

Please complete the following steps in order to purchase and install a Thawte SSL Certificate. If you need to renew an existing certificate, please go here.

STEP 1 : GENERATE CSR

The first step in setting up your own SSL certificate is generating a CSR. To do this, you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Login to your Site Manager (click here if you do not know how to login to your Site Manager).
  2. Click on the "Site Applications" from the top nav bar.
  3. Click on the "Ecommerce" section of the "Site Applications" menu.
  4. Click on the "OpenSSL" link from the "Ecommerce" section of "Site Applications".

IMPORTANT NOTE: After clicking the "OpenSSL" link from the "Ecommerce" section of "Site Applications" you will be prompted to fill out your "Site Details" which will help generate the CSR. DO NOT ABBREVIATE. You need to use the full names in all of the required feilds. For example, when it asks for your state, type the complete name, not the 2 letter abbreviation.

STEP 2 : ORDER CERTIFICATE

After you have generated your CSR you are ready to order your SSL Certificate. You will need to click here to access the SSL Certificate order form. While filling out the order form it is very important that the CSR is entered in exactly as it was generated.

Please enter the following information when completing your forder form:

Web Server Software
   RedHat Linux

Technical Contact
   Full Name: WestHost Hostmaster
   Job Title: Hostmaster
   Telephone: 1-435-755-3433
   E-Mail Address: thawte@westhost.com

IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT ABBREVIATE. You need to use the full names in all of the required fields. For example, when it asks for your state, type the complete name, not the 2 letter abbreviation.

STEP 3 : APPROVAL & VERIFICATION

Once you've submitted your SSL certificate application and CSR you will need to wait 24 to 72 hours for approval and verification. During this time Thawte may request additional verification information about your company in order to complete the application process (for example, you may be required to fax your business license to Thawte). Once your certificate application is approved you will receive confirmation from Thawte via e-mail.

STEP 4 : CERTIFICATE INSTALLATION

Once you have received your confirmation from Thawte, you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Login to your Site Manager (click here if you do not know how to login to your Site Manager).
  2. Click on the "Site Management" from the top nav bar.
  3. Click "Login" from the "File Manager" portion of your screen.
  4. Navigate to /etc/httpd/conf/ssl.crt/. Rename the file server.crt to server_temp.crt
  5. Upload the certificate you purchased to the same directory as the file you renamed (/etc/httpd/conf/ssl.crt/).
  6. After doing this, the VPS must be restarted - this is most easily accomplished using the VPS Restart button in your Site Manager at "SiteManagement > Site Parameters".
